Black Friday!

Black Friday was CRAZY! People go a little nutty on Black Friday.... My hope is that I will never have to work in retail on Black Friday ever again. Here's a jiggy doodle I made to describe the day.

Goodbye Urban Outfitters

My last day at Urban Outfitters was on Black Friday. I suppose after working there for over 8 years I had to go out with a BANG! The great part is that I got a new job! Not only is it a new job, but it is an amazing job as a UI Designer for PopCap Games. I will finally be designing full time! R.I.P. Urban Outfitters. I will miss you dearly.

Goodbye.

Back To School: Tot By Toys!

I've decided to periodically go back to some of my school projects that I really enjoyed and post some of the images that didn't make it on my portfolio site, and a also give a little description about each project. This logo is one of them. I created this logo for a company called Tot By Toys. The store specialized in educational designer toys for kids. Here are my inspiration photo's (from research), and the final logo. As you can see, I pulled a little inspiration from each of these images, but I have to admit, my main sources of inspiration came from Dr. Seuss and Sanrio, two of the world's greatest artists and designers out there!

Things Are Looking Up!

This weeks illustration for that weekly drawing thing was a lot of fun! The directions were to illustrate type that reads "things are looking up". I had so much fun with it that I made two different drawings and had a hard time deciding which one to submit!

Animal Topiaries

I created this little tree friend for that weekly drawing thing. He's an animal topiary! I was thinking of drawing a picture of a tree about to eat a little boy, but I ran out of time and drew this guy instead. I feel like I should just call my blog that other weekly drawing thing since all I post are drawings for that blog...but none the less, I love my little blog and will continue to post, even if this is all I post each week.

Monster Fish Man & His Drug Pig

Tis the time to get excited about Halloween! I created this one for that weekly drawing thing, and since it was my week to choose the topic, I went all out!

Here's the story behind the name:
I wanted to have a nice Halloween theme, so I first chose Monster Fish Man. Then later in the week, I went hiking with my brother, his wife, and my dad, and as we were hiking my brother and I began trying to speak in German (because my brothers wife knows German) and by mistake I ended up saying Drug Pig! So there you have it, and what a fine title it is! Have a wonderfully spooky Halloween!

Mountain Man

This is my interpretation of an old man of the mountains. He's a giant that knows all and has many stories to tell of the vast and dangerous mountain passes. This is another drawing for that weekly drawing thing. The word given was mountain.

Imaginary Deity

Here's another drawing I did for that weekly drawing thing. As my mind wandered and swayed to and fro, a little flying king pig popped into my head.

That Weekly Drawing Thing

This is another drawing I did for that weekly drawing thing. It's now an official blog! The description was One-Horned Beast (mythical, extinct, and otherwise). Check it out! There's a lot of great ones on the site...and there will be many more to come, so stay tuned!

Weekly Email Design

My friend and ex-classmate Mr. Aaron Bloom started a weekly design email thread where someone picks a word, saying, or sentence and we design or draw whatever we like. It's grrrreat fun! Here are the first two that I designed.

Mr. Gromble the Dingus

I created this old guy from a word that a couple of my co-workers came up with. Dingus. It came to them while wandering around in Home Depot, so I took those idea's and created the old and ornery Mr. Gromble! He would smack you in the head with his cane if you could see it!

Naked and Famous - Young Blood

This video is pretty sweet. I just thought I should share it with you. It makes me want to go have fun in the sun. It also makes me want to go swimming or tubing down a river. I thought the music sounded a lot like M83 when I first heard it...but it's not. This song is sweet. I look forward to hearing the rest of their album soon, it releases Sept. 6th, 2010. The albums called 'Passive Me, Aggressive You'. Oh....and the band is called Naked and Famous.

Celebrate! Yeah Hoo!

I'm finally beginning to relax now that school has come to an end. I miss all of my school buddy's, but I definitely don't miss the homework. So sit back and enjoy this amazing feeling with me by watching this video, which is pretty much 100% pure goodness.

I'm Going Bonkers!

This is kind of how school is making me feel right about now. BONKERS! Just like this commercial, it's a little crazy but it also makes me laugh a lot.

Momentos: by Nuno Rocha

Found this video on vimeo recently. So good! I love how it says so much without any words. It's by this dude named Nuno Rocha. It's so beautiful. You should definitely turn up the sound when you watch this.

These are some fancy cards I made for my school. They asked for a birthday, Christmas, and blank card.

Anatomy of a Garment Poster Revision

My poster was chosen for the Anatomy of a Garment Apparel Design Show! It only had to go through one small revision. I had to take out the ladies head. Here it is.

Anatomy of a Garment Poster

Here's a poster I did for the Seattle Central Apparel Design Portfolio Show. They told us the name of the show and that we could do whatever we want. With the name being Anatomy of a Garment I thought it would be sweet to have it look like an old 50's vintage blueprint of how to make a garment that someone pulled out of a drawer in their parents basement.

Sketch Book Doodles

I just bought a sketch book so that I could draw random doodley woodles. Here are a couple I made during my free time on Spring Break. The first is a bit random and the second one is a picture of my cat(if he was a doctor ... that wore glasses ... and wore clothes ... and stood like a human).

Synesthesia-My Experimental Typeface

My class is having an experimental type show on April 8th which is going to be incredible. Here's the blurb and all of the characters I made for the show.

SYNESTHESIA:
My x-type is based off my observations of my wife’s recent discovery of her synesthesia. For my typeface I used her descriptions of each letter form and illustrated them the way I perceive them. Here’s a brief description of the condition.

Synesthesia—From the words syn, “together,” aisthesis, “sensation”—is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes. In my wife’s case she has two different forms of synesthesia.

In one of the most common forms of synesthesia, grapheme, color synesthesia, individual letters of the alphabet and numbers (collectively referred to as graphemes), are “shaded” or “tinged” with a color. While different individuals usually do not report the same colors for all letters and numbers, studies with large numbers of synesthetes find some commonalities across letters (e.g., A is likely to be red).

Ordinal-linguistic personification (or personification for short) is a form of synesthesia in which ordered sequences, such as ordinal numbers, days, months and letters are associated with personalities and genders.

There you have it! A very interesting yet strange condition. It was a lot of fun drawing these descriptions and I hope you enjoy viewing these little characters as much as enjoyed making them. I especially enjoyed the unknowns. Which one are you?!?
